Underground Transportation

The success of any mining operation, especially an underground operation, depends to a large extent on the quick and efficient removal of coal from the face. In order to accomplish this end, the coal is loaded at the face into shnttle cars, or on to conveyor belts, in the prodnction area and is thns transferred to the main hanlage system. Many miles of belt conveyors are nsed, most of them anto-matically controlled so as to stop the flow of coal in the event of any unforeseen condition (Mnllen and Rinner, 1992). 

Approximately 4000 miles (6400 km) of railroad are in use in North American underground coal mines in the second half of the twentieth century, with track equal in qnality to that of many surface railroads. Trains carrying np to 26 tons (26 x 10 kg) of coal in each car were hanled by 35-50 tons (35-50 x 10 kg) locomotives, either completely out of the mine or as far as the shaft or slope foot where the coal was transferred to the shaft hoist or slope conveyor.

Intrinsically non-flammable polymers are few, but phenolic resins have a good reputation both in Are and smoke performance, which has resulted in their becoming increasingly favoured for reinforced plastics structures, for example, underground transport, where such concerns are greatest. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is also a low fire and smoke polymer. Unsaturated polyesters, vinyl esters and epoxy resins bum readily, but modified versions are available with improved behaviour. For example, both bromine and chlorine are used extensively in the form of chlorendic (HET) acid, tetrachlorophthalic anhydride (TCPA) and tetrabromo-phthalic anhydride (TBPA) which can be reacted into the polyester in small quantities and can act as permanent (non-migrating) flame retardants.

For the underground transportation to the final disposal position in SFR a special vehicle with hydraulic transmission and suspension suitable for safe U ansportation and release of RPV has been suggested.
