Several drugs can be analyzed by their ultraweak chemiluminescence. Some examples are given in Table 5. 

Some organic reactions produce ultraweak chemiluminescence. Grignard reagents [75, 76] and indole derivatives [13], for example, have very low < )cl (10 5— 10 8) when they are oxidized. Many cellular systems also produce this dim or low-level chemiluminescence during phagocytosis [77], chemotaxis, and mitosis... 

This reaction is of some interest because it is implicated in the ultraweak chemiluminescence emitted by oxidizing pol5uners (78-82). 

This is important in food analysis and technology, as affecting also the stability of plastics under every-day conditions, i.e. in the presence of air and light. The chemiluminescence observed is extremely weak (yields of 10" einstein/mole" or less). Such light emission is very probably caused by peroxy radical recombinations (see p. 23). Measurements of the spectra of such ultraweak chemiluminescence have been achieved [53-55]. 

We were fortunate to have oral and poster presentations given by scientists from 19 countries, as well as active participation from industrial exhibitors. The sessions included luciferase-based bioluminescence, photoprotein-based bioluminescence, fundamental aspects and applications of chemiluminescence, luminescence imaging, fluorescence quantum dots and other inorganic fluorescent materials, phosphorescence and ultraweak luminescence, instrumentation and new methods.
