In addition, ASA may be blended with other polymers that themselves exhibit high heat distortion temperatures. For example, blends of poly(ether imide) and ASA exhibit an improved heat distortion temperature, improved flexural properties and tensile properties in comparison to the ASA component alone and have lower impact strengths as well (35). The statement above has been exemplified using Ultem 1000 as a poly(ether imide) resin and Geloy 1020 as ASA component. [Pg.341]

Not all polyetherimides are limited by their tractability, however. Certain aromatic polyetherimides are characterized by a combination of properties that makes them potential engineering thermoplastics (90). One of these polymers contains an isopropylidene unit in the backbone to enhance the solubility. It is a mol ding material introduced by General Electric in 1981 and sold as Ultem resin. Attractive features include high temperature stability, flame resistance without added halogen or phosphoms, high strength, solvent resistance, hydrolytic stability, and injection moldability. [Pg.333]

Polyimide (PI) caps all other polymers in its temperature range of use (-200 to 260 °C in air short-time even up to 500 °C). Because of its high price, it is used in special cases only, such as space vehicles, nuclear reactors and some electronic parts. Newer developments, related to polyimide, are the polyether imides (e.g. Ultem ), polyester imides and polyamide imides (e.g. Torlon ), all with very good mechanical, thermal and electrical properties and self-extinguishing. [Pg.17]

Figure 12 represents a cross section of a plated sample of ULTEM 1000 having a peel strength of 118 g/mm. Little physical surface change of the plastic has occurred as a result of the pretreatment steps. Figure 13 is a cross section of copper plated ULTEM 2312. While a mechanical component to adhesion is present, it is much less than that found in traditional swell and etch treatment (Figure 2). Physical alteration of the plastic is confined to the outermost 25ii. The bulk properties of the plastic (flexural strength, electrical resistivity) are unaffected by this new process (Table I). The objective of this work has been to generate films, tapes or ribbons which might serve as a prepreg from blends of either an Ultem or a PEEK or a high molecular weight PPS with various liquid crystalline polymers, to identify the parameters that control the formation of reinforcing microfibrils of LCP phase, and to study the mechanical properties of the composite films. [Pg.417]

The processing properties are improved when polylmides are produced from meta substituted diamines.(— A new amorphous polyether-imide (Ultem) with a high heat deflection temperature has been introduced by the General Electric Co. [Pg.96]

Table 3 summarizes the fluorine content, inherent viscosities, and thermal properties of the synthesized fluorinated polyetherimides The inherent viscosities (for conditions, see footnote of Table 3) of the F-PEI polymers varied from 0.34 to 0.72 dL/g. PEI 7a was obtained at an inherent viscosity of 0.47 dL/g, which is comparable to the value of commercial Ultem 1000 (17 =0.5dL/g). DSC measurements showed that all F-PEIs are amorphous with a Tg range from 220 °C to 247 °C. Within the first series denoted as 7a, 7b, and 7d, Tg between 220 and 224 °C were detected, whereas 7c exhibits a slightly higher Tg of 232 °C. Polymers 8a, 8b, and 8d show Tg between 234 and 236 °C, whereas the Tg of 8c is at 247 °C. [Pg.201]

Poly(aryl ketones) (PEEK, PEK, and PEKK) are commercial high temperature polymers offering an excellent combination of properties combined with thermoplastic behavior. Poly(aryl ether ketone) PAEK blends have been reviewed by Harris and Robeson [1989]. Miscibility with PEI (Ultem 1000 GE) and other PI containing isopropylidene bridging units was noted. Arzak et al. [1997] reviewed the performance ofPEEK/PEI blends and noted a synergistic behavior in ductility and impact strength as reported earlier. Utility of these blends as a thermoplastic matrix candidate for advanced composites has been proposed [Harris and Robeson, 1989 Davis et al., 1992]. [Pg.1178]

Additional polymer blends comprising PAEK s offering property combinations of potential utility include PSF [Robeson and Harris, 1986 Harris and Robeson, 1989] structurally different poly(aryl ketones) [Harris and Robeson, 1986], PAr [Robeson and Harris, 1992], poly(amide-imide) PAI [Harris and Gavula, 1992], PPS [Robeson, 1987], and other PI [Harris et al., 1992]. Mixtures of structurally different PAEK s were noted to be isomorphic within specific limits of ether/ketone ratios [Harris and Robeson, 1987]. Blends of polybenzimidazole, PBI and several commercial PI (Ultem 1000 and Matrimid 5218) have been studied in depth at the University of Massachusetts and found to be miscible. FTIR studies [Guerra et al., 1988 Kim et al., 1993], NMR studies [Grobelny et al., 1990], thermal, dielectric, and mechanical... [Pg.1178]
