U coupling

The coupling between the spin momenta is referred to as xx coupling. The results of coupling of the s vectors can be obtained in a similar way to U coupling with the difference that, since x is always 4, the vector for each electron is always of magnitude 3 ft/2... [Pg.207]

Flow coulometry experiments were performed to study the reduction of U02 in nitric, perchloric, and sulfuric acid solutions [56]. The results of these studies show a single two-electron reduction wave attributed to the U02 /U + couple. The direct two-electron process is observed without evidence for the intermediate U02" " species because of the relatively long residence time of the uranium ion solution at the electrode surface in comparison to the residence time typically experienced at a dropping mercury working electrode. The implication here is that as the UO2 is produced at the electrode surface, it is immediately reduced to the ion. As the authors note a simplified equation for this process can be written, Eq. (7), but the process is more complicated. Once the U02" species is produced it experiences homogeneous reactions comprising Eqns (8) and (9) or (8) and (10) followed by chemical decomposition of UOOH+ or UO + to [49]. [Pg.1057]

Up to now,we always assumed a U coupled pair distribution to give a good description of both the proton 2p-2h excitation and of the neutron distribution over the valence model space. The quadrupole component of the proton-neutron force will induce 0+- 2+ pair breaking for both protons and neutrons which we call the core polarization effect.Thus,0 ground state and intruder wave functions... [Pg.191]

Tetronic acids and P-keto-y-butyrolactones are easily prepared by reaction of an 0-trimethylsilylated cyanohydrin with a-bromo esters in the presence of a Zn- u couple in a Reformatsky-type reaction (Scheme 12). ... [Pg.551]

From the Frost diagram in Figure 23.15, it can be seen that the most stable oxidation state of uranium in aqueous acid is U (i.e., it has the most negative free energy of formation, the quantity plotted on the y axis). However, the reduction potentials for the U02 /U02 and U02 /U couples are quite small, +0.170 and +0.38 V, respectively (hence, the U02 /U potential is +0.275 V). Therefore, b ause the O2/H2O reduction pwtential is 1.229 V, the most stable uranium ion is U02 if sufficient oxygen is present ... [Pg.213]

Uranium metal liberates H2 from acids to give the claret-coloured U which is a powerful reducing agent (Figure 24.6). The U" ion is rapidly oxidized to [U02] by Cr(VI), Ce(rV) or Mn(VII) but oxidation by air is slow. The U" /U and [U02] /[U02] redox couples are reversible, but the [U02] /U" couple is not the first two involve only electron transfer, but the last couple involves a structural reorganization around the metal centre. [Pg.757]

Fig. 3. IB CRLAS apparatus, nable infrared laser radiation U coupled into the ring-down cavity. The light transmitting the output mirror is focused into an InSb detector. The resulting signal is amplified, digitized, and sent to a PC where it is fit to a firsi order exponential, which is directly related to the total cavity loss per laser pass. The PC additionally controls the scanning of the dye laser. Base line losses are determined by scanning the laser with the expansion turned off and are then subtracted from the data, yielding the absolute sample absorbance, from which the carrier concentrations are extracted." ... The fluctuations described by the two fields, U and W, are qualitatively different. This is already apparent from the fact that one, U, gives rise to a complex contribution to the field that acts on a chain, while the other, W, corresponds to a real one. The field U couples to the total density 0 + < b and has been introduced to decouple the incompressibility constraint. Qualitatively, it con-... [Pg.14]
