On the other hand, double null mutants for/a5-ciclin I and the abl gene, which encodes a tyrosine kinase, shows gross defects in axon growth for the identified motoneuron, RPl (Elkins et al., 1990b). In 83% of double mutant embryos, this neuron extends an axon down aberrant routes. Since abl null mutants alone show no obvious neural defects, it appears that these two gene products effect axon guidance by parallel pathways, which are functionally redundant.
