Type S hydrated lime

Specifications vary from manufacturer to manufacturer tmd from one design of plant to another. In general, most require either high-calcium quick- or hydrated lime with not more than 2 %, and preferably less than 1 % of MgO (2 % of MgO causes an expansion of 0.5 % in the autoclave). Higher levels can be accepted, where Type S hydrated lime is used, in which the magnesium is fully hydrated. The combined CO2 should be less than 7 %. Hydraulic components, namely silica and alumina, should be less than 5 % in total.

Hydrated dolomitic limes are powdered slaked limes consisting of calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide (see semi-hydrated lime and Type S hydrated lime). 

It is understood that some producers of dolomite, who operate shaft kilns to make particularly soft-burned dolomite, inject steam into the combustion gases to moderate kiln temperatures. The resulting lime has a higher reactivity, and is particularly suitable for the production of Type S hydrate [15.1]. 

Lime specifications. Only slaked lime should be used in hot-mix asphalt. Both powdered hydrated lime and milk of lime meeting the requirements of Types CL 70, 80, or 90 [26.18] would be fully satisfactory, as would Type S dolomitic limes [26.19]. 

Dolomitic limes are limes mainly consisting of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide (see calcined dolomite), calcium hydroxide and magnesium oxide (see semi-hydrated dolomitic lime), or calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide (see Type S hydrated Ume).

Dolomitic limes which are fully hydrated (i.e Type S [26.19], or non-expansive [26.18]) can be used, providing the addition rate is increased to compensate for the reduced CaO content.

Lurgi CFB Process. In this SO2 removal process, hydrated lime is injected into a circulating fluid bed (CFB) reactor located ahead of the particulate removal system. Water is also injected into the reactor to cool and humidify the gas and increase the SO2 removal efficiency. A mixture of fly ash and reacted and unieacted sorbent particulate in the gas from the CFB reactor is collected in a special downstream mechanical dust collector curtain followed by an ESP. Most of the collected particulate is recycled to the CFB reactor (Keetii et al., 1991B). In 1993, eight systems of this type were operating or were under construction in Europe, and two were under construction in the U.S. (Moore, 1993B). 

The actual name dry scrubbing was first publicized by Teller [U.S. Patent no. 3,721,066 (1973)]. He worked both with classical Army-type soda-lime and with his patented water-activated form of the alkaline feldspar nepheline syenite as a flow agent and feedstock sorbent for HF and SO9 in hot, sticky fumes from glass melting furnaces. He claimed capture of more than 99 percent of 180 ppm HF and SO9 for more than 20 hours in a packed bed of 200 X 325 mesh hydrated nephehne syenite at 42,000/hr.
