Tvarminne area

The wasting disease itself is caused by Lahyrinthula zosterae-, however, massive outbreak of the disease occurs only if Zostera spp. additionally is stressed by other factors like, for example, enhanced temperature (Den Hartog, 1989 Muehlstein, 1989 Short et al., 1986). Moreover, Lahyrinthula zosterae seems to be restricted to high salinities. Bostrdm et al. (2003) showed that the Zostera losses in the 1930s occurred only in high saline areas of the Danish Baltic Sea coast, which fits well to the fact that losses of Zostera stands did not occur in the Tvarminne area (Bostrdm et al., 2002). [Pg.503]
