Fig. 5. Two samples of a nominally 15-p.m calcium carbonate powder, tumbled in the free-fall tumbling mixer/sampler, taken nine minutes apart. The similarity between the two samples demonstrates that these are probably representative of the bulk powder. Fig. 5. Vacuum or Pressure Most tumbling mixers can have provision for vacuum or pressure. Mixers which cannot be adapted to these conditions are iTuulers with rotating pans. Continuous mixers introduce problems of sealing the charge and discharge ends. [Pg.1768]

Most plastics e.g. polyolefins and polystyrenes and their derivatives such as ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) and SAN (styrene-acrylonitrile) are supplied by the manufacturers in ready-to-use form with most of the above-mentioned stabilizers or simply need to be additionally stabilized with other additives, e.g. antistatic agents and HALS stabilizers, as required. On the other hand, in the case of other materials (e.g. PVC) it is the end user who adds the additives, pigments or preparations. This is normally done on fluid or high-speed mixers, although in the past gravity mixers or tumble mixers were also used. The mixture is then homogenized on mixing rolls, kneaders, planetary extruders or twin-screw kneaders and further processed. [Pg.161]

An aliquot of 250 pi of plasma to be analysed and 250 pi of the standard solution were pipetted in an 11.5 ml glass tube. Then, 250 pi of acetate buffer solution was added and mixed for ten seconds on a vortex mixer. 9 ml of extraction liquid was added and the solution in the tubes was extracted on a Heidolph tumble mixer. A potential problem is present if the solvents used are mixed in different compositions a composition can possibly be selected that has a density equal to the density of the aqueous layer. This may give rise to problems with the phase separation. [Pg.287]

Still another mixing device can be used in explosives industry- It is the tumbling mixer which, accdg to Perry (Ref 7, pi212), exists in three varieties a) " tumbling barrel or "ball mill (Ref 7, Fig 32) b) "double-cone mixer (Fig 33) and c)... [Pg.452]

Two important methods are the spinning riffler and the free-fall tumbling mixer. The first has been proven to be the most superior method of sampling in experiments and should be used whenever possible. The second has not been investigated fully but deserves... [Pg.2969]

Industrial equipment. Rotating-shell mixers or tumbling mixers are shown in Fig. 3. Drum-type, cubical-shaped, double-cone, and twin-shell blenders with their axis of rotation horizontal to the center of the drum on its axis increase crossflow and improve the mixing action. Cubical and polyhedron-shaped... [Pg.2976]

For tumbling mixers, there are three main mechanisms for mixing convective mixing, shear mixing, and dispersive or diffusive mixing. " All three mechanisms are present to some extent in free-fall mixers. During scale-up, as the batch size is increased, so are the forces (gravitational, convective, and shear) that... [Pg.3204]

One method of scaling up such mixers is based upon keeping the Froude number n Ljg constant, where L is a characteristic length of the equipment, n is the rate of rotation, and g is the gravitational acceleration, Scaleup procedures for tumbling mixers are discussed in detail by Wang and Fan. ... [Pg.954]
