Trypanosomicidal activity

Encelin from Montanoa speciosa is inhibitory to growth and development of fungal cells of Mucor rouxii. Other cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactones from Montanoa tomentosa ssp. microcephala have been reported.45,46 A number of kaurane diterpenes and e/tf-kauranoids have been reported that are potentially useful because of their cytotoxicity against human tumor cells, anti-HIV activity, and trypanosomicidal activity.47 56 New structures are frequently discovered, and probably we will learn new effects in humans and animals in the future.57,58 Paradoxically, these plant natural products probably have specific and important effects in the plants, but we are still ignorant of these roles. 

Compound 19 was found to be 5 times more potent than metronidazole (22), but was dropped due to its high toxicity [20,21]. Similarly misonidazole was equipo-tent to metronidazole against Trichomonas spp. and . histolytica [22]. Radanil, on the other hand, exhibited promising trypanosomicidal activity, particularly against Chaga s disease [20]. 

Craciunescu et al. (1463,1464) examined the antimmor activity of a range of rhodium and iridium tris(dithiocarbamate) complexes. Iridium complexes showed low activity against various tumors and there was also a correlation between this activity and their trypanosomicidal activity against various trypanosoma species in rats. Rhodium complexes showed similar behavior with [Rh(S2CNHPh)3] being most promising. As a result the nephrotoxic effects of the latter were studied by optical and electron microscopy.
