Tropospheric oxidant pollution, role

Oxidant Formation. The role of HO. in controlling the time-scale and severity of tropospheric oxidant pollution may be seen from the parameterization of O Brien and co-workers (75,76). The simplest possible mechanism for oxidant (Le. ozone, PAN, H2O2, etc.) formation consists simply of the reaction of an individual NNlHCj with HO. to convert the NMHCj to a generic product(s) PRODj, followed by removal of the product by HO. (PROD photolysis may be important, but is ignored here)... [Pg.75]

This is a very broad conclusion, and additional measurements must be made. Some of this effort (which is current) should address the problem of other pollutants and condensation nuclei that accompany the nonurban oxidant. Interpretation of these measurements will increase the specificity of separating anthropogenic sources from natural background sources. Theoretical assessments of the existing observations will shed light on the relative roles played by stratospheric injection, plant emission, background methane, and diy deposition on surfaces in the natural portion of the tropospheric ozone cycle. [Pg.677]

To treat the chemistry of oxides of nitrogen, which play such a central role in the chemistry of both the polluted and remote troposphere, in a consistent manner, we have discussed the formation and fates of... [Pg.294]

Although the hydroxyl radical (OH) is present only in a trace amount in the troposphere, it plays a central role in its chemistry because it is a strong oxidizing agent and can react with many pollutants as well as some CFC substitutes (see p. 704). (a) The hydroxyl radical is formed by the following reactions ... [Pg.723]
