Many chelating agents are available commercially. The two that have come into common use for boiler deposit control are ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). In practice, the tetrasodium salt of EDTA and the trisodium salt of NTA are used, rather than the acid. Both of these materials chelate bivalent and trivalent metallic ions on a mole for mole basis.
