Triphenylphosphine adduct

The combination of triphenylphosphine with esters of trihaloacetic acids provides a reagent system for the stereo- and regio-selective conversion of alcohols into alkyl halides.The bromine-triphenylphosphine adduct has been used at low temperatures (-50 C in dichloromethane) for the removal of the tetrahydropyranyl protecting group from tetrahydropyranyl ethers derived from secondary and tertiary alcohols.The reactions of tertiary phosphines (and other trivalent phosphorus compounds) with iodine in aprotic solvents have received further study, a range of species being identified.The first reported study of the reactions of trivalent phosphorus compounds with monopositive astatine has led to the identification of stable complexes with triphenylphosphine, trioctylphosphine, and triethylphosphite. 

Solutions of Et2GaI react with CH2N2 at — 50°C in ether in the presence of a trace of CuCl to give Et2GaCH2l. This is not isolated but is reacted with Me3SiMgCl to give Et2GaCH2SiMe3, which is isolated as its 1 1 triphenylphosphine adduct. 

Some of the cyclobutadiene complexes [e.g., (XIII) and (XXVIII)] appear to be inert to the action of donor ligands such as phosphines, pyridine, etc. However, a number form adducts. These have not been fully described, but triphenylphosphine adducts of tetramethylcyclobutadienenickel chloride (XIV) (28) and tetraphenylcyclobutadienenickel bromide (XXXIII) (41) and an o-phenanthroline complex (29) of the former have been reported. Other reactions with donor molecules in which the cyclobutadiene-metal bond remains intact are mentioned in Section VI, G.
