Tricyano-4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-butadiene The reaction mixture in each experiment using initiator gave a red butadiene adduct which was isolated after the precipitation of the polymer, by evaporating the methanol. The product was recrystallized from acetone to give red crystals, m.p. 208-209 C. Selected experiment gave 50% butadiene adduct. Solution experiment gave less yield. Tricyano-s-triazine (322) is mono-substituted very rapidly with anhydrous methanol (20°, few min) and with water di- and trisubstitution products also result under mild conditions (65°, one min, and 65°, several hr, respectively, for methanol). 

As expected for a tricyano compound, it is highly endothermic (AH°j (s) +348.1 kJ/mol, 3.78 kJ/g), so its stability seems dubious [1]. However, because of isomerisation to the acidic dicyano-enimine (NC)2C=C=NH, it is considerably stabilised and the silver and sodium salts surprisingly are described as stable [2],...
