Hartwick et al. (HIO) found the TCA extraction procedure less suitable for the analysis of nucleosides and bases in serum, with analytical recoveries ranging from 54 to 68%. It is believed that a 15% loss in recovery could be attributed to nucleoside and base solubility in tri-n-octyl amine/ Freon extraction medium. 

The supernatant is shaken with 15 ml of 10 % tri-n-octyl amine in xylene pre-equilibrated with 8 N nitric acid. The extraction is repeated twice. Since plutonium is extracted into the organic phase together with thorium and uranium, the solvent is washed in turn with 2 portions of 15 ml of 8 N nitric acid and with 2 portions of 15 ml of 10 N hydrochloric acid in order to remove most of thorium and uranium. Then plutonium is back-extracted with 15 ml of 6 fi hydrochloric acid containing 0.2 H hydrofluoric acid or... 

Effects of y irradiation on the plutonium extraction characteristics were studied of tributylphosphate (TBP) and alkylamines (26). In irradiation to the extent of 108 R, marked change was observed with TBP system tending to bring losses of plutonium, while little change was found with the extraction systems of tri-n-octyl amine and of cyclohexyl dilauryl amine. 

Lin and Long [41] applied ELM to effectively separate nitrate ions (94% efficiency) from water with tri-n-octyl amine as the extractant and sodium carbonate as the internal phase. H+ ions were also transported along with NOs from external to the internal phase (cotransport). Kobya et al. [86] studied the kinetics of thiocyanate ion removal from aqueous potassium thiocyanate solution by counter-transport process using quaternary ammonium salt of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride as the cander and sodium chloride solution as the stripping phase.
