Trental - Pentoxifylline

Pentoxifylline (Trental) or cilostazol (Pletal) may be useful in selected patients. Revascularization is successful in selected patients. 

Anticoagnlants, medications that block the formation of clots, have also been used. These work by preventing clots from forming around the atherosclerotic plaques that would further block blood flow. A variety of anticoagulants including warfarin (Coumadin), pentoxifylline (Trental), and aspirin have been used.

A 43-year-old woman was admitted to hospital in December feeling unwell with a two-week history of urinary symptoms. She had decompensated cirrhosis of her liver on ultrasound and was taking pentoxifylline (oxpentifylline, Trental), co-amoxiclav, omeprazole and thiamine. She was jaundiced and confused with respiratory failure limiting speech to partial sentences. There was a marked deterioration in liver function overnight and she went into acute renal failure.

Vasodilators such as naftidrofuryl (Praxilene) and oxpentifylline (pentoxifylline) (Trental) increase blood flow to skin rather than muscle they have also been successfully used in the treatment of venous leg ulcers (varicose and traumatic).
