Trazodone contraindications

The triazolopyridine trazodone does not have an appreciable effect on the re-uptake of the neurotrans-mittors dopamine or noradrenaline. It is a weak inhibitor of serotonin re-uptake but is a potent antagonist of the serotonin 5-HT2 receptor. Clinical experience has shown unpredictable efficacy. Trazodone has little antimuscarinic activity and has little if any action on cardiac conduction. Like mianserin it can therefore safely be used in patients for which anticholinergics are contraindicated and there are no absolute contraindications for patients with concomitant diseases of the cardiovascular system. 

Nefazodone (Serzone), like venlafaxine, is a new antidepressant that affects multiple neurotransmitter systems. Like trazodone, nefazodone is a potent 5-HT2A receptor blocker. In addition, it is both a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. The most common side effects are nausea, headache, anxiety, sedation, and dizziness. Its use is contraindicated with Seldane, Hismanal, and Propulsid, and there is a warning regarding its use with Xanax. 

TCAs (especially imipramine and clomipramine)—contraindicated with MAOIs (trazodone may be used cautiously with MAOIs) Increased TCA levels s3mdrome of excitation, very high temperature, mania, seizures, coma, death... 

Trimipramine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to tricyclic antidepressants, trazodone, and related compounds in the acute recovery phase of myocardial infarction (MI), because the drug depresses cardiac function and causes dysrhythmia in patients in coma or severe respiratory depression (additive CNS and respiratory depression) and during or within 14 days of therapy with monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
