To date, no unanimous agreement or consensus on the exact mechanism and the relative importance of the different transport mechanisms for hydroxide transport occurring in AEMs exists and transport through the membrane can be the product of any combination of the mechanisms described above. Further research to elucidate the detailed mechanism of hydroxide transport through AEMs is a prerequisite for further AEM development.
