Transmitted electrons, information obtained

In transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a beam of highly focused and highly energetic electrons is directed toward a thin sample (< 200 nm) which might be prepared from solution as thin film (often cast on water) or by cryocutting of a solid sample. The incident electrons interact with the atoms in the sample, producing characteristic radiation. Information is obtained from both deflected and nondeflected transmitted electrons, backscattered and secondary electrons, and emitted photons. [Pg.133]

If information is converted to x,y coordinates and transmitted by scanning to a picture screen of cholesteric liquid crystals, localized heating can be obtained on the screen corresponding to the electronic information. When the points of localized heating have different heat content, a colored picture is formed. [Pg.88]

There are two types of electron energy loss spectroscopy currently in use. The first of these is found in scanning transmission electron microscopes. As indicated in Figure 5.1, compositional information may be obtained in the TEM by measuring the energy loss of the inelastically scattered electrons transmitted through a thin specimen. [Pg.185]

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) resembles optical microscopy, except that electromagnetic instead of optical lenses are used to focus an electron beam on the sample. Two modes are available in TEM, a bright-freld mode where the intensity of the transmitted beam provides a two-dimensional image of the density or thickness of the sample, and a dark-field mode where the electron diffraction pattern is recorded.
