Taken together, these observations signify a role for both the 5/and 6d shells in the bonding, and show that all twelve electrons in the valence shell participate. This description gives each uranium-oxygen linkage a formal bond order of three. Most of the examples in Fig. 6.1 obey the 18-electron rule although some exceptions are shown. The platinum compound has a 16-electron conhguration, common for many planar complexes late in the transition series (p. 174). Complexes of the early transition elements also often depart from the rule the metal valence orbitals are relatively high in energy (especially 4p) leading to greater ionic character in the bonding. [Pg.194]

For example, the unique spatial distribution and energy of f-valence orbitals combines with the considerable size of the lanthanides to afford the potential for unusual coordination geometries. The shielding of the 4f electrons by the filled 5s and 5p shells means that the bonding orbitals are relatively unexposed to any electrostatic or covalent character introduced by the coordination environment compared with transition metal d-orbital interactions. [Pg.338]
