This task was done by comparing the new compound first against the KEGG COMPOUND database to retrieve a list of candidate compounds that are most similar to the query. The matched compounds are then queried against the RDM pattern library to retrieve a list of putative RDM patterns. In the third step, the query compound is transformed into new possible compounds based on the retrieved transformation patterns. These newly generated compounds are then used iteratively as a new query to repeat the prediction cycle until no new transformations can be found. This approach retrieved successfully the degradation pathway for 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobenzene (34). 

Context increments are needed when the execution of a rule depends on increments belonging to an already existing link that was created by the application of another rule. Context is used for instance to embed newly created edges between already transformed patterns. Owned increments can be further divided into dominant and normal increments. Dominant increments play a special role in the execution of integration rules (see Subsect. 3.2.4). Each link can have at most one dominant increment in each document. A link can relate an arbitrary number of normal increments.

A typical transformational pattern is to introduce a new system solution into a previously existing web of capabilities, which in turn transforms the way people work together or the tools that they use to do their work. An example is the development of space-based navigation signals in the 1960s that resulted in the present-day Global Positioning System (GPS).

According to mathematical processing there are natural patterns and transformed patterns. 

The transformed pattern is obtained from the measured Mbsshauer spectrum (i.e., from the natural pattern) by mathematical transformation (e.g., by Fourier transformation). For instance, the magnetic hyperfine field (i.e., effective magnetic flux density) distribution or the quadrupole splitting distribution are considered transformed patterns. The transformed pattern may give a better resolution for the analysis. 

In some cases, the natural pattern consists of hundreds of elementary patterns. This is the typical situation with poorly crystallized and amorphous systems. The transformed pattern (O Fig. 25.23) can help get more information about the short-range ordering (by characterizing some of the most probable arrangements), thus it can enhance the analytical applicability. 

Another, so-called model-independent way of spectrum evaluation is done by obtaining and analyzing transformed patterns. For a thin absorber, the spectrum shape S( ) can be described as the convolution of a density function /( ) with a Lorentzian function L( ) ...

Often, the relation between values of two entities can be represented by some function that takes a value on one side as an input and returns a value on another side as an output, i.e., some processing is needed to map the entities. The complexity of this processing varies from simple string operations to sophisticated mathematical functions. This type of correspondences is considered in (Scharffe 2009) as the Property value transformation pattern, where the author distinguishes between the string-based, operations on numbers and unit conversion transformations. In the following, several types of such correspondences are described in detail.
