7 track magnetic tape

Two RK05 moving head cartridge disk drives provide mass storage capabilities of 3.2 million words. The most economic solution to long term storage is magnetic tape. A 9 track, 800 bits per inch, 45 inches per second tape drive was used. 

Maintain a system for tracking the locations where electronic records are stored (hard drives on mainframes and personal computers, magnetic tapes, disks, CDs and other media). This system is required to enable timely retrieval of electronic data. 

The invention of the transistor in 1947 revolutionized the communication industry. The subsequent development of microelectronics and a cartridge tape system led to commercialization of audio cassettes for the mass market in the 1960s. Magnetic tapes were designed to have two sound tracks, one to play in the forward direction and the second one when the tape was reversed. Then stereo sound, using two speakers, came into vogue. Four separate sound tracks were needed now, two tracks in each direction. 

An optical system distributes the radiation received on the water vapor and atmospheric window detectors. The radiations are amplified and transformed into electric signals (voltage), and recorded onto two of the five tracks of the HDRSS system. When interrogated, the magnetic tapes play back and transmit to Earth the information stored on the magnetic tape, along with data from other experiments assigned to the same equipment, with the time code. 

The introduction of high-fidelity, stereo mierogroove 33-1/3 LPs, and 45s meant more durable, better sounding reeords could be made cheaply. The adoption of magnetic audio tape and multi-track recording by both movie and record companies made it easier to produce music for either medium.
