Thus, tlie focus of tliis subsection is on qualitative/semiquantitative approaches tliat can yield useful information to decision-makers for a limited resource investment. There are several categories of uncertainties associated with site risk assessments. One is tlie initial selection of substances used to characterize exposures and risk on tlie basis of the sampling data and available toxicity information. Oilier sources of uncertainty are inlierent in tlie toxicity values for each substance used to characterize risk. Additional micertainties are inlierent in tlie exposure assessment for individual substances and individual exposures. These uncertainties are usually driven by uncertainty in tlie chemical monitoring data and tlie models used to estimate exposure concentrations in tlie absence of monitoring data, but can also be driven by population intake parameters. As described earlier, additional micertainties are incorporated in tlie risk assessment when exposures to several substances across multiple patliways are suimned. [Pg.407]

The view at Cadmium changed with time starting from a valuable resource and ending up as a toxic element with a limited number of applications not substituted by alternative products. The decontamination of the technosphere works to a certain extent. Due to the character of Cd as trace contamination of phosphate fertilizers and of Zn ores and fossil fuels, there is no final solution for the environmental contamination. Due to the restrictions issued in many countries, there is reason to fear that Cd could end up in unknown material streams. From an analysis of the refining of Zn ores in 2002, it has been concluded that about one quarter of Cd generated as by-product ( 7,000-8,000 Mg) could not be found either in the products analyzed or in the emissions from the process [27]. [Pg.160]

Without appropriate cleanup measures, BTEX often persist in subsurface environments, endangering groundwater resources and public health. Bioremediation, in conjunction with free product recovery, is one of the most cost-effective approaches to clean up BTEX-contaminated sites [326]. However, while all BTEX compounds are biodegradable, there are several factors that can limit the success of BTEX bioremediation, such as pollutant concentration, active biomass concentration, temperature, pH, presence of other substrates or toxicants, availability of nutrients and electron acceptors, mass transfer limitations, and microbial adaptation. These factors have been recognized in various attempts to optimize clean-up operations. Yet, limited attention has been given to the exploitation of favorable substrate interactions to enhance in situ BTEX biodegradation. [Pg.376]
