In 1948 in the steel-mill town ofDonora, Pennsylvania, intense load smog killed nineteen people. In 1952 in London over 3000people died in one of the most notorious smog events known as London Fogs in 1962 another 700 Londoners died. 

Our group had first come together on New Year s Eve, a little over two months before, when we met with Solo and Ev, who were still a couple then and not intending to join us. Our encounter had occurred in the fog-girt town of San Augustine in Colombia. Now... 

The town was unchanged and my earlier visit had put me on a first-name basis with the rickshaw boys. I felt almost like I was home. "Rama Hotel," I told my favorite driver, and before I knew it I was back in room number one, and the fog-bound chess tournaments on Flores seemed no more than a half-remembered dream. 

The largest undertakings in the fleld of the Science Service experiments were the Sampson College project which involved the fogging of over a hundred buildings aggregating some 50,000,000 cubic feet of space and the fogging of some 4000 acres of woodland and recreation areas in the town of Webb, N. Y., from a helicopter. 

Similar effects would be exerted by a tower during the existence of fog in a town. That is, the plume would help to ventilate the town. Note, however, that this positive effect is likely to be minimal under most conditions. 

Based on this definition, the first documented case of air pollution occurred in 1272 when thousands of people died as a result of volcanic ash. During the early to mid-1900s, several air pollution episodes resulted in either unacceptable illness levels or death. For instance, in 1948 the mill town of Donora, PA, was subjected to a 4-day fog from the uncontrolled steel mill emissions reacting with other constituents in the atmosphere. The fog left 14,000 people (half the town) sick and 20 dead.

An especially severe inversion formed above Donora toward the end of October 1948. On Tuesday, the 26th, the weather began to close in, and the morning fog took longer than usual to burn off. The next day was worse, and on Thursday the town was closed in. The renowned medical writer Berton Roueche portrayed the scene ...
