Mechanical Properties. Mechanical properties obtained on the cured resins included tensile strength and fracture toughness. Tensile tests were run on an Instron model 1122 Universal Tester with a crosshead speed of 0.02 /minute. Tests were run on dry and saturated samples in air. Fracture toughness (K ) values have been obtained using a MTS 610 Materials Testing System at 0.02 /minute at ambient and elevated temperatures in air. The compact tensile specimens tested were 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.125 in dimension. Mechanical properties data are based on the results from four or more tests run at each condition. [Pg.369]

Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)440-442 is a copolymer of ethylene and a terminal alkene with improved physical properties as compared to LDPE. The practically most important copolymer is made with propylene, but 1-butene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, 1-hexene, and 1-octene are also employed.440 LLDPE is characterized by linear chains without long-chain branches. Short-chain branches result from the terminal alkene comonomer. Copolymer content and distribution as well as branch length introduced permit to control the properties of the copolymer formed. Improvement of certain physical properties (toughness, tensile strength, melt index, elongation characteristics) directly connected to the type of terminal alkene used can be achieved with copolymerization.442... [Pg.771]

The properties of immiscible polymers blends are strongly dependent on the morphology of the blend, with optimal mechanical properties only being obtained at a critical particle size for the dispersed phase. As the size of the dispersed phase is directly proportional to the interfacial tension between the components of the blend, there is much interest in interfacial tension modification. Copolymers, either preformed or formed in situ, can localize at the interface and effectively modify the interfacial tension of polymer blends. The incorporation of PDMS phases is desirable as a method to improve properties such as impact resistance, toughness, tensile strength, elongation at break, thermal stability and lubrication. [Pg.2238]

The effects of composite formation are not only restricted to the improvement of mechanical properties, such as toughness, tensile strength, and many other, but also include, improvement of thermal and electric conductivities (carbon black, pol yrrole), reduction of water migration (platelet fillers such as talc and mica), improvement fire resistance (alumina trihydrate), improvement of quality (wood-like feel with wood filler), and decorative value. [Pg.118]

Orientation consists of a controlled stretching of the polymer chains of the film in such a way as to orient the chains in a direction parallel to the plane of the film. In general, all thermoplastics may be oriented the benefits are somewhat greater for some materials than others depending on the material and/or the particular characteristic that is to be improved. Orientation generally improves toughness, tensile strength, flexibility, and shrinkability. It may also be used to improve the clarity of transparent films and to decrease the gas and moisture permeability of some films. [Pg.195]

The study revealed that water vapour diflfiised rapidly in silicone rubber and that in a PDMS-salt compound surrounded by water, the water that entered the rubber was absorbed by the salt particles, creating an osmotic pressure in the rubber. This pressure gave rise to internal cracks in the rubber, which eventually percolated and resulted in a salt exchange between the rubber-salt compound and the surrounding pure water. Equations describing the onset and propagation of the microcracks in the silicone were derived as a function of mbber fracture toughness, tensile modulus and osmotic pressure of the salt. 22 refs. [Pg.71]

Yang Mujie et al. (1984c) have synthesized polymer composite films of rare earth PA and various elastomers butadiene styrene rubber, natural rubber, cis-1,4 PBd, and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer these showed higher toughness, tensile strength, and resistance to oxygen attack. [Pg.414]
