Zemplen was a strong-minded individualist who opposed any totalitarian system, from Nazism to Communism. He was briefly jailed toward the end of World War II by the Hungarian Fascists for refusing to join in the evacuation of the Technical University to Germany when the Russian armies advanced on Budapest.
