Totalitarianism

Zemplen was a strong-minded individualist who opposed any totalitarian system, from Nazism to Communism. He was briefly jailed toward the end of World War II by the Hungarian Fascists for refusing to join in the evacuation of the Technical University to Germany when the Russian armies advanced on Budapest. He was also strongly opposed to the Communists.

The Lysenko affair is one of the most thoroughly documented and horrifying examples of the politicization of science, but no country or age is immune. In totalitarian societies politicized science often leads to tragedy in democratic societies politicized science often ends in wasted time and effort and sometimes in farce. 

To illustrate the different histories of politicized science in totalitarian societies and democracies, I will compare Lysenko s biology in the Soviet Union with the history of cold fusion in the United States. Most of my discussion of cold fusion has been taken from the excellent book by John Huizenga, Cold Fusion The Scientific Fiasco of the Century. ... 

Politicized science is an inevitable part of the human condition, but society must strive to control it Although history shows that politicized science does much more damage in totalitarian societies than in democracies, even democracies are sometimes stampeded into doing very foolish and damaging things. 

The extremes of both the old and the new environments can t visualize a future or live in the present, and their being-in-the-world is characterized by modes of resonance that move in response to similar vibrations they are respectively the apocalyptic and the totalitarian mentalities. Anarchists are those who believe any form of government is bad, in contrast totalitarians believe there should be one political party that rules a nation. 

If a drug is sufficiently deactivating and spellbinding, it can be used on humans and animals alike under any circumstances where an authority desires to impose control. Thus the antipsychotic drugs are used in every kind of authoritarian or totalitarian institution.
