Total synthesis olivomycin

The total synthesis of the disaccharide unit in olivomycin A, using L-threonine as the precursor, is mentioned in Chapter 3. 

In connection with studies of the total synthesis of olivomycin A a review has appeared on the synthesis of the dideoxysugar components from acyclic precursors. In related work model reactions were carried out for the disaccharide coupling of the anthracycline antibiotic mithramycin (see Scheme 9). ... 

It appeared that iodoacetate 46 is an excellent glycosyl donor when activated by trimethylsilyl triflate at low temperatures high a-stereoselectivity and excellent yields were obtained with warious acceptors including glycals such as 47 which gave a disaccharide glycal 48 incorporated into the total synthesis of olivomycin A...
