TOSC Assay (Total Oxyradical Scavenging Capacity)... 

This assay has been used to determine the antioxidant activity of common vegetables, fruits including apples and strawberries (Eberhardt and others 2000 Chu and others 2002 Sun and others 2002 MacLean and others 2003 Meyers and others 2003), and fruit juices (Lichtenthaler and Marx 2005). No studies have yet reported the application of TOSC assay for the assessment of in vivo antioxidant status. 

When the radical inhibition reaches its theoretical maximum, ethylene is not produced and the value of TOSC is equal to 100 [3]. 

The intensity cross-correlation and XFROG trace of the optimal pulse contains three sub-pulses (Fig.3). The time separation between the sub-pulses almost matches 1.5 times the oscillation period of the first excited state (Tosc 440fs) [6].

The total oxygen-scavenging capacity (TOSC) assay is based on the oxidation of a-keto-y -methiolbutyric acid (KMBA) to ethylene. Ethylene formation is monitored by gas chromatography in the course of reaction and areas below the kinetic curves for control sample and analyzed sample are compared. The oxidant is usually ABAP, but other oxidants were also used and compared (R5, W12).

When a boundary propagational—substance is a mixture of a self-reactive substance and an inert substance in a pure form, the SC-DSC measurement is made on the pure self—reactive substance, and the value obtained by multiplying the value of Qdsc by the ratio of the amount of the self-reactive substance to the boundary substance may also be used as the value of Qdsc for the boundary substance.Tosc is not changed by dilution. Two temperature ranges can be distinguished for the two series of catalysts. For alumina catalysts, at Tqsc < 523K platinum is more active than rhodium and at Tqsc > 523K the opposite order is observed. For ceria-alumina catalysts, the same phenomenon is observed but the inversion temperature occurs for Tosc = 623K.
