Toriyama studies

Okazaki and Toriyama studied the dynamics of liquid molecules 2 propanol and water confined to nanochannels (pore size 3 4 nm) of the mesoporous mate rial MCM-41 as a function of temperature using spin probe ESR [37]. They used DTBN and TEMPOL as the spin probes (concentration 0.2 mM). Both the spin probes were freely soluble in the two liquid hosts and did not have any strong inter action with the channel walls of MCM-41. It was seen that in both the liquids, the ESR spectra were characteristic of immobilized spin probes at temperatures even as high as 40° above their respective melting points. In addition, the 2 propanol... [Pg.15]

In order to obtain the optimum dielectric strength, it is necessary to avoid the formation of voids. Thomas, Lontz, Sperati, and McPherson have shown that the dielectric strength may be as low as 200 volts/mil when polytetrafluoroethylene is fabricated in a way which produces several per cent voids. Sugita, Nagao, and Toriyama also showed how the elimination of voids improved the corona resistance of polytetrafluoroethylene and decreased the rate of dielectric breakdown. The dielectric breakdown under prolonged stress was studied by Brodhun. He also showed how the presence of corona causes an additional effect. Pao and Bjorklund performed quantum mechanical calculations of the energies of excited electronic states. [Pg.486]

The primary event caused by radiation is ionization or direct excitation of polyethylene chains, RH, which leads to the alkyl radical formation. Toriyama et al. [4] proposed a reaction mechanism for the radiation effect on polyethylene based on the ESR study. They presumed that an alkyl radical and an H atom were generated either directly from the dissociation of the excited state polymer or from the recombination between the cation radical and the electron primarily generated by ionization. There are three possible reaction paths involving the charge recombination ... [Pg.23]

As the first step of spin manipulation, Okazaki and Toriyama [16] studied the microwave power dependence of the RYDESR spectra for the photoreduction of anthraquinone in SDS and perdeuteriated SDS micellar solutions. Their observed spectra are shown in Fig. 14-5, together with the simulated spectra under various powers. Fig. 14-5(A) shows the RYDESR spectra in an SDS solution at the microwave power of 4.0 and 1000 W. A relatively sharp spectrum was observed at 4.0 W, where the HF structure should remain from the simulated spectrum. The spectrum obtained at the microwave power of 1.0 kW is broadened over the range of 40 mT, showing a minute structure at the center. Fig. 14-5(B) shows the RYDESR spectra in a perdeuteriated SDS micellar solution at the microwave power of 16 and 1000 W. [Pg.222]
