The chewing of betel quid ingredients in Asia is often associated with high incidences of oral, pharyngeal and esophageal tumors in man. Ranadive et al. (1979) reported that an undefined mixture of betel nut, beteT Teaf, lime and catechu produced both oral and gastric tumors in Syrian hamsters. Since this mixture produced lesions, subsequent fractionation experiments demonstrated that betel quid with tobacco and betel quid alone could serve as a promoter of stomach lesions. These experiments tend to verify, in laboratory animals, the possible causal relationship of betel quid chewing and cancer in humans. [Pg.95]
