Tissue transplantation transplant tolerance

Establishment of tolerance to tissue grafts. If a newborn X mouse is injected with Y cells when it is young, it is tolerant to Y tissue transplants when it becomes an adult. If the X mouse is not exposed to Y cells at an early age, it readily rejects the tissue graft. [Pg.843]

Adult mice may be made tolerant to foreign antigens by destroying their immune system with whole-body irradiation and then supplying them with transplants of bone marrow and thymus from a foreign donor, thus refurbishing their system with competent B and T cells, respectively. With the new immune system the animal is now tolerant to any tissue from a mouse that is isogenic with the mouse used to supply the marrow and the thymus. [Pg.842]
