Timber rafting

For adequate airbourne sound insulation in houses and offices, dry lining and composite wall panels incorporating foamed plastics are often used with walls. There is also the floating floor construction commonly used, where an air gap is created by placing a resilient material (rubber or foamed plastic) between the timber raft and the concrete floor.

The tank rested on a sand pad laid on a thin R.C. raft, 0.22 m thick, which was in turn supported uniformly onatotal of 1250ftato (mangrove) timber piles. Each pile, which was 100 mm diameter, was 20 m long with 3 sleeve joints and a 2 m long R.C. dolly at the top. The piles were installed at 0.5 m apart. The design fluid for the tank had a specific gravity of 0.87. 

There was an inadequate supply of Irish poles for the initial period and experiments with concrete poles as used throughout Europe proved them to be expensive and difficult to maneuver into position by the manual workers. Einland had copious timber supplies and ultimately provided up to a million poles for the Irish scheme. Thousands of these poles were floated down Einland s rivers and lakes to the ports - in one instance a world record raft of 5,400 poles was floated down for the Irish trade. For thirty years, pole-carrying ships were continuously sailing between Finland and Dublin, Cork or Limerick in Ireland. Storage and treatment depots were set up in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, strategically located for distribution to rural areas. Skinning the bark and creosoting were carried out in these depots...
