Tidal stream systems

The tidal stream system uses the kinetic energy from the ebbing and surging tides. [Pg.388]

Existing Water Controls. In some waterways, controlling the flow of water can confine heavier-than-water spills. Tidal streams can simply be diked. Waterways used for irrigation may have a system of diversion gates that can be closed or a pumping system that can be shut down. Typically, streams, creeks, and rivers are not controlled and require a different approach. [Pg.288]

Pulse Tidal has developed a system whereby tidal streams move horizontal blades up and down to drive a generator. The test system shows that... [Pg.722]

The orbits of double stars, where the sizes of the orbits have been determined, provide the only information we have about the masses of stars other than the Sun. Close doublestars will become decidedly non-spherical because of tidal distortion and/or rapid rotation, which produces effects analogous to those described above for close artificial planetary satellites. Also, such stars often have gas streaming from their tidal and equatorial bulges, which can transfer mass from one star to the other, or can even eject it completely out of the system. Such effects are suspected to be present in close doublestars where their period of revolution is found to be changing. [Pg.665]

The hydrologic cycle governs the rate of water transfer and movement in wetlands. Water transfer also governs the removal of toxic organics from wetlands. Water enters wetlands primarily from rainfall and surface runoff from the adjacent watersheds or upland areas. Tidal waters are a major water source in coastal wetlands. Generally, over time the quantity of water leaving a wetland is compensated by water entering the system, especially in lakes, streams, and estuaries. [Pg.527]
