Data can be plotted in two ways either as a total scan (TIC—Total Ion Chromatogram) or as a small number of individual ions (SIM—Selected Ion Monitoring) characteristic of a particular compound (see Fig. 10.12). A total ion chromatogram is used to identify unknown compounds. A specified mass range is scanned—for example 40 to 400 Daltons.
