Throughput problem

All of the assays mentioned can be set up in an automated, medium-throughput system however, all require a specific assay to measure the compound concentration at the end of the assay, which places significant limitations on throughput. There have been recent attempts to solve the throughput problems inherent in this type of assay by developing generic endpoint assays for metabolic stability, but there has been no clear solution to date. 

Historically, the throughput problem has been addressed by heuristics for scale-up of conventional packed beds for multicomponent separations. The most recent scale-up analyses, focusing on intraparticle mass-transfer resistance as a limiting factor, have led away from the traditional long columns to several alternative geometries (108, 109, 110). 

Better techniques for preparing old chemical munitions for disposal are clearly needed. These techniques must not only cope with the safety, environmental and throughput problems, but also need to address the requirement for portable or transportable systems suitable for using in the field.
