Ernest Lee Tuveson, The Avatars of Thrice Great Hermes An Approach to Romanticism (Lewisburg Bucknell University Press, 1982). On the philosophy of the Corpus Hermeticum and the forms it took in the Romantic era, especially in Anglo-Saxon countries. 

Another rather ethereal alchemical author of this period is Hermes Trismegistus, or Thrice Great Hermes. Texts attributed to him were Greek translations of Egyptian sacred texts attributed to Thoth, the god... 

One of the first translations in the modem era is that of G.R.S. Mead, Thrice Great Hermes Studies in Heiienistic Theosophy and Gnosis, vol. 2 (London Theosophical Publishing Society, 1906). The Hermetica still hold considerable allure for some witness the Dutch private library founded by Joost Ritman, Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermettca in Amsterdam, which contains over 20,000 books on esotericism, including a 1471 editton of the Corpus Hermeticum. 

This book is a manual to the science of Hermes, the Thrice-Great, and a true guide to that Sacred and Royal Art. It presents the specific teachings and guided practices that will enable the sincere aspirant to attain to the secret of all spiritual works that can culminate in the completion, the Great Work. For this work is theurgy— Divine work —the true Alchemy that is the practical application of the holy Qabalah. It leads to the attainment of the Philosopher s Stone, whereby the personal consciousness and the Primordial consciousness unite as one. That Stone—the Jewel of Eternity—overcomes all limitation, heals all disease, and brings an end to the need for death itself. 

Hermes but, to show that the Egyptian Hermes was being referred to, the title Trismegistus, meaning thrice great, was added to form Hermes Trismegistus. 

Hermes Trismegistos (Fig, 6), or Hermes the Thrice-Great, the Greek counterpart of the Egyptian god, Thoth, was revered by the adepts of alchemy as the father of their liermctic Art, and the patron of its practitioners. For this reason they often styled themselves the sons of Hermes/... 

It s a Dream Team in another sense as well. Although the reputed author of the putative Emerald Tablet, the touchstone of alchemy, there is no evidence that a Hermes Trismegistus ever existed. The name of the reputed father of alchemy, Her-mes-The-Thrice-Great, is a bit suspicious. In any case alchemy came to be called the hermetic art. When we hermetically seal something, we protect it from air much as some alchemical experiments were sealed in glass and buried literally for years.
