In 1969, Thomas published two papers [11,12] in which a molecular structure theory was developed without invoking the Bom-Oppenheimer approximation. In these publications and two further papers published in 1970 [13,14], Thomas studied methane, ammonia, water and hydrogen fluoride adding the kinetic energy operators of the protons to the electronic hamiltonian and using Slater-type orbitals centered on the heavier nuclei for the protonic wave functions. Over the years, a number of authors [15-23] have attempted the development of a non-Bom-Oppenheimer theory of molecular structure, but problems of accuracy and/or feasibility remain for applications to arbitrary molecular systems.

In addition to the problems concerning reactivity and the nature of the tether, at least two different regio-isomers are possible for internal Diels-Alder reactions (210 and 211 from 209), depending on the orientation of the alkene as it approaches the diene. If the tether is short, only 211 is possible, but with longer tethers 210 can be a side product or even the major product. An example taken from Thomas studies on the synthesis of cytochalasin is an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of 212 that gave a 27 5% mixture of 213 and 214.20 ...

Russo and Thomas studied a series of PUs with increasing percent of hard segment by mechanical testing at low strain rate [300]. They found that an increase in the HS content results in an increase in the initial modulus, and of ultimate strength, and also determines a decrease of the elongation to break. 

Brennsteiner et al. ° used vapor-grown carbon fibers, a coal-derived foam, and carbon nanofibers for electrochemical removal of heavy metals, including Cd ions. These workers suggested that the adsorptive removal was due to the development of porosity and high surface area of the carbon materials. They did not consider the role of surface chemistry of the activated carbon or the pH of the solution in influencing the adsorption of Cd(II) by carbons. Jia and Thomas studied the... 

Kuykendall and Thomas studied the photophysics of tetrakis(V-methylpyri-dyl)porphyrin adsorbed on colloidal smectite and proposed that the photophysics can be a convenient method to monitor the degree of dispersion or extent of deflocculation of a clay dispersion to produce primary particles or single sheets (156). 

The amount of oxygen required for a corrosion rate of 0.07 g Fe/cm /year is estimated to be 575 cc/mVday. Thomas studied oxygen permeation rates for several types of coatings and found that they have rates far below what is needed to maintain the corrosion reaction, as shown in Table 1.2 [9,10].
