Thiols interact readily with many rubber-containing materials. For this reason, care should be taken in the selection of gasket and hose materials. Teflon, Kel-F, Viton, or other suitable fluoroelastomers function as gasket materials. Viton is suitable for hoses. Carbon steel is useful for many thiols, although some thiols become very discolored when carbon steel is utilized. In these cases, the use of stainless steel is very desirable. Isolation from air and water also minimizes color formation. 2-Mercaptoethanol and 1,2-ethanedithiol should be stored in stainless steel (61). 

Lewisite-induced vesicant and systemic toxicity are likely due, in part, to interactions with thiol groups (Goldman and Dacre, 1989). The interaction with enzyme sulfhydryl groups may cause inhibition of enzyme by the formation of stable cyclic stmctures with arsenic. These thiol interactions result in energy depletion leading to cell death (Young, 1999).

Multisegment CdTe-Au-CdTe nanowires have also been used for FET-based sensing of DNA [53], Synthesized by consecutive electrodeposition onto an anodized alumina template these metal-semiconductor nanowires exhibit a p-type behavior. Thiol-terminated ssDNA probes were bound via Au-thiol interaction to the Au segment of the nanowires. Target DNA could be detected at 1 fiM and higher concentrations. 

NP-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes, the reporter DNA-modified liposomes hybridized directly to thiol-terminated capture probes bound to the Au NPs via Au-thiol interaction. In the presence of target DNA strands specific to coli 0157, liposome-labeled reporter DNA was displaced from the electrode surface. Remaining [Ru(NH3)6] loaded liposomes were quantified via square wave voltammetry. This "signal-off" mechanism provided a detection limit of 150 fM (0.75 amol in 5 /uL).

In general, quinones undergo both addition and reduction reactions with thiols. Much of the early work on quinone-thiol interactions, mostly dealing with reactions of /7-quinones, some of which was reported before the turn of the century [204, 205], has been reviewed [206], More recently, however, some reports concerning the reactions of o-quinones with thiols have appeared [207-209].
