Thioglycol acid

The thiazolyl-2-thioglycollic acid (119) undergoes intramolecular ring closure to give mesoionic compound 120 under treatment with acetic anhydride and triethylamine (Scheme 60) (192). The parent acid (119) can be recovered from 120 by hydration with hot 50% aqueous sulfuric add. Compound 120 affords monohydrate of bis(-cyclopentenothiazolyi-2-thio)acetone (121) (192). 

In 1880, R. Andreasch (52) confirmed the new formula (37) by preparing thiohydantoine through condensation of thioglycolic acid with cyanamide (the reverse reaction of the basic hydrolysis of thiohydantoin). 

In 1887 (57) and 1889 (73) Andreasch confirmed the cyclic formula proposed by Liebermann and Lange (20). Freydl (74) obtained rhodaninic acid by condensing thioglycolic acid with thiocyanic acid.

To find a suitable masking agent, we look for a species that binds with the interferent but does not bind with the analyte. Oxalate, for example, is an inappropriate choice because it binds with both Al and Fe. From Table 7.6 we find that thioglycolic acid is a selective masking agent for Fe in the presence of Al and that F is a selective masking agent for Al in the presence of Fe.

Major industrial uses for chloroacetic acid are in the manufacture of cellulose ethers (mainly carboxymethylceUulose, CMC), herbicides, and thioglycolic acid. Other industrial uses include manufacture of glycine, amphoteric surfactants, and cyanoacetic acid. 

Waving Lotions. The reagent most frequently used for the reduction of hair is thioglycolic acid [68-11-1]. Although a variety of other mercaptans have been screened (51), none has been able to match the unique combination of efficacy, safety, and low cost that is a hallmark of thioglycolic acid. 

Health and Safety. The dermal toxicology of alkaline solutions of thioglycolic acid has been reviewed extensively (63—65). The reagent has been found harmless to normal skin when used under conditions adopted for cold waving. Some irritation is observed on abraded skin but this appears to be associated with the alkaline component of the waving solution (65). Hand protection is recommended for the professional hairdressers who routinely handle these products.
