Thinking development

The specific role of vitamin A in tissue differentiation has been an active area of research. The current thinking, developed in 1979, involves initial dehvery of retinol by holo-B >V (retinol-binding protein) to the cell cytosol (66). Retinol is then ultimately oxidized to retinoic acid and binds to a specific cellular retinoid-binding protein and is transported to the nucleus. Retinoic acid is then transferred to a nuclear retinoic acid receptor (RAR), which enhances the expression of a specific region of the genome. Transcription occurs and new proteins appear during the retinoic acid-induced differentiation of cells (56). [Pg.103]

Symbolic operation stage (from 11-12 to 14—15 years) stage of hypothetico-deductive thinking combinatory thinking develops and judgements can be reversed. [Pg.473]

Under the leadership of the General Manager, the Supply Chain and Operations Area had embraced the principles of lean thinking developed by Toyota (Liker, 2004) and applied them. Within 12 months the operational sections had been reconfigured into 7 value streams that represented the company s major product lines cross-functional teams had been established to eliminate sources of inefficiency such as waste, non-conformance and duplication communication channels had been unblocked and individuals had been empowered. [Pg.394]

Another line of thinking developed around the notion of citizenship. Against the normative assumption of equal citizenship within a state s territory, newer approaches have looked at how the practice of citizenship varies according to factors such as class, ethnicity, region, or rehgious identity. Whereas such factors often influence who becomes displaced in the first place, displacement makes it very visible how conditions of local citizenship define processes of integration (Biun 2005). [Pg.92]

Creativity and lateral thinking can work together for managers in developing new products or ideas Edward de Bono shows how. [Pg.444]

We are sure that with this system we have developed a powerful tool to eliminate the shortcomings of manual inspection as discussed in the beginning of the article. We are also sure that this automatised test is not suitable in all applications. However, where there are many details to be tested and where these can be handled automatically, we think AMPl may be a competetive alternative which improves both the quality of inspection and the working environment. [Pg.641]

Once I had decided on a career in chemistry, I was determined rather single-mindedly to make a success of it. I sometimes think about what would have happened had I chosen a different occupation or field. Having a rather competitive nature, I could probably have done reasonably well in a number of other areas. Certainly for some fields you must be born with a special talent. Musical talent, artistic ability, business acumen, leadership ability, and vision can be further developed. [Pg.224]

Calculating the solubility of Pb(I03)2 in distilled water is a straightforward problem since the dissolution of the solid is the only source of Pb + or lOa. How is the solubility of Pb(I03)2 affected if we add Pb(I03)2 to a solution of 0.10 M Pb(N03)2 Before we set up and solve the problem algebraically, think about the chemistry occurring in this system, and decide whether the solubility of Pb(I03)2 will increase, decrease, or remain the same. This is a good habit to develop. Knowing what answers are reasonable will help you spot errors in your calculations and give you more confidence that your solution to a problem is correct. [Pg.157]

Approximately 300 students have joined me in thinking and learning about analytical chemistry their questions and comments helped guide the development of this textbook. I realize that working without a formal textbook has been frustrating and awkward all the more reason why I appreciate their effort and hard work. [Pg.815]

A new edition of any book presents an opportunity which an author welcomes for several reasons. It is a chance to respond to constructive criticisms of the previous edition which he thinks are valid. New material can be introduced which may be useful to teachers and students in the light of the way the subject, and the teaching of the subject, has developed in the intervening years. Last, and certainly not least, there is an opportunity to correct any errors which had escaped the author s notice. [Pg.468]

The method of approach given here works best if a diagram of the process model is first produced, such as shown in Figure 1. To simplify matrix development and look at the problem as a process design, do not think of the matrix in terms of equations. Rather, the rows are... [Pg.347]

Phenolic resins were the first totally synthetic plastics invented. They were commercialized by 1910 [I]. Their history begins before the development of the structural theory of chemistry and even before Kekule had his famous dreams of snakes biting their tails. It commences with Gerhardt s 1853 observations of insoluble resin formation while dehydrating sodium salicylate [2]. These were followed by similar reports on the behavior of salicylic acid derivatives under a variety of reaction conditions by Schroder et al. (1869), Baeyer (1872), Velden (1877), Doebner (1896 and 1898), Speyer (1897) and Baekeland (1909-1912) [3-17]. Many of these early reports appear to involve the formation of phenolic polyesters rather than the phenol-aldehyde resins that we think of today. For... [Pg.869]
