Thermoreversible system

Corresponding DLS and rheology studies to prove the validity of the Eq. (18) were performed on another thermoreversible system (three mixtures made of xanthan gum and locust bean gum (XG/LBG) (Richter et al. 2004b, 2005) and on the irreversibly radical chemical cross-linking system (W-vinylcaprolactam/ 2-hydroxylethyl- methacrylate/allylmethacrylate) (Richter et al. 2004c). [Pg.58]

In general, the small-ampUtude oscillatory shear experiment seems to be the more sensitive method for a safe detection of the gel point, formed by the incipient infinite percolated cluster for thermoreversible systems. Sometimes it is difficult to decide which of the TCFs during a temperature scan has the most linear behaviour in the observed delay time window. As it was shown in (Richter et al. 2004b Richter et al. 2005), the effect in rheology is more pronounced, such that 1-2 K... [Pg.59]

The results above are only valid for tetrafunctional crosslinking of monodisperse polymer. However, in many thermoreversible systems the crosslinks have functionalities that are much larger than four. Moreover, the polymers used are not monodisperse in general. In order to be able to calculate network parameters the present author [39—44] extended the Flory-Stockmayer model for polydisperse polymer which is crosslinked with f-functional crosslinks. It was possible to calculate network parameters for polymers of various molecular weight distributions (monodisperse polymer with D s M, /r3 = 1, a Schulz-Flory distribution with D = 1.5, a Flory distribution with D = 2, a cumulative... [Pg.6]

From the colorless state it can be switched with light of short wavelength (A = 380 nm) via an electrocycHc ring opening and cis/trans rotation of one half of the molecule into a state with violet/purple color. The reverse reaction is effected by visible light (A = 580 nm). Since the system is metastable, one of the two reaction directions is matched by a rival thermal reaction, the thermoreversion. This progresses, however, in the case of benzospiropyran, at room temperature by a factor of 10 slower than the light-induced reaction. [Pg.151]

An interesting and potentially u.seful variant is deployment of thermoreversibility, a situation where the reaction occurs at relatively high temperature in a homogeneous phase, which becomes a two-pha.se system at lower temperatures, facilitating catalyst recovery. Here, tailored ligands have to be u.sed. Ethoxylated phosphines have been suggested by Jin, Fell, and co-workers (1996, 1997). [Pg.142]

Chapter 6 (Photochromism of dihydroindolizines and related systems). The dihydro-, tetrahydro- and hexahydroindolizine compounds involving one, two or three nitrogen atoms make up another family of compounds that exhibits a generally thermoreversible photochromic system based on 1,5-electrocyclization reactions (Scheme 6). Photobleaching is sometimes superimposed on the thermal back reaction. [Pg.6]

Modification of macromolecular material properties by hydrogen bond formation has been demonstrated at the example of thermoreversible networks Stadler modified poly(butadiene) elastomers with urazole groups to introduce hydrogen-bonded cross-links into the system. In fact, thermoreversible cross-linking appeared due to the urazol-urazole molecular recognition, causing intermolecular cross-links [408,467]. The group of Meijer expanded the approach by the synthesis of two... [Pg.147]

The technique of aqueous catalytic reactions has had such an impact on the field of more general two-phase reactions that scientists have now also proposed and tested other solutions. Fluorous systems (FBS, perfluorinated solvents cf. Section 7.2) and nonaqueous ionic liquids (NAILs, molten salts cf. Section 7.3) meet the demand for rapid separation of catalyst and product phases and, owing to the thermoreversibility of their phase behavior, have advantages in the homogeneous reaction and the heterogeneous separation. However, it is safe to predict that the specially tailored ligands necessary for these technologies will be too expensive for normal applications. Compared to the cheap and ubiquitous solvent water, with its unique combination of properties (cf. Table 1), other solvents may well remain of little importance, at least for industrial applications. Other ideas are mentioned in Section 7.6. [Pg.717]
