Thermoforming films

Plastic films represent the largest worldwide market for plastics with practically all extruded (6). They are used to meet different performance requirements particularly for its major packaging market. Worldwide just for biaxial oriented (Chapter 8) polypropylene consumption is about 5 /2 billion lb. Their use includes tape, food, tobacco, and confectionery. Thermoforming film (and extruded sheets) is a major processing technique producing all kinds of products. [Pg.174]

Products A wide range of polypropylene products (homopolymer, random copolymer and impact copolymer) can be produced to serve many applications, including injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, film, extrusion, sheet and fiber. Impact copolymer produced using this process exhibits a superior balance of stiffness and impact resistance over a broad temperature range. [Pg.162]

Ethylene vinyl alcohol is also used in production of plastic bottles, thermoform film and sheet, and flexible squeeze tubes. It is being experimented with for microwave food packaging applications, but this use is not yet commercial. It could, however, provide a large new market for EVOH if the application can be successfully demonstrated. [Pg.183]

Styrenic Resins Styrenic resins are thermoplastics prepared by firee-radical polymerization of styrene alone or with other unsaturated monomers. The properties of styrenic resins vary widely with molecular structure, attaining the high performance level of engineering plastics. Processed by blow and injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, film techniques, and structural foam molding. Used heavily for the manufacture of automotive parts. [Pg.211]

The most common use of P LA is for compostable sugarcane trays and in punnets or pallets. A starch derivative, PLA can be manufactured from maize and other plants and is a biodegradable, compostable plastic material. The material is obtainable in a range of blends and can be used in sheet or film form for a diverse range of products including food containers. It can be used for rigid thermoforms, films. [Pg.78]
