Therapeutic competition in the pharmaceutical market as a whole

In England there are fewer therapeutic substances available per chapter, section and paragraph/subparagraph. These data confirm that the number of therapeutic competitors is greater in Spain than in England. [Pg.66]

For the most prescribed substances in each therapeutic chapter, positions of dominance are uncommon. Both the median and the weighted average are below 25 per cent. However, Table 4.6 shows that a small group of active ingredients enjoy dominant positions in most of the therapeutic sections and paragraphs/subparagraphs, particularly in England (arithmetic mean of market shares over 55 per cent), but also in Spain (arithmetic mean of market shares over 34 per cent). [Pg.66]

The market share of the most frequently prescribed active ingredients is larger in England. For example, the weighted average of the market share of the most prescribed substance at therapeutic section level stands at 41 per cent in England, yet only 23 per cent in Spain. [Pg.66]
