The Rosicrucian Society was the Golden Dawn and not the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. Ayton was not a member of the latter.

The Theosophical Society opened a branch headed by Lady Caithness, Duchesse de Pomar, who felt that she was the reincarnation of Mary Queen of Scots (McIntosh 157). 

The following year a further pamphlet appeared. The Confession of the Rosicrucian Fraternity, addressed to the Learned in Europe, and in 1616, The Chymical Nuptials of Christian Rosencreutz. This latter book is a remarkable allegorical romance, describing how an old man, a lifelong student of the alchemistic Art, was present at the accomplishment of the magnum opus in the year 1459. An enormous amount of controversy took place it was plain to some that the Society had deluded them, whilst others hotly maintained its claims but after about four years had passed, the excitement had subsided, and the subject ceased, for the time being, to arouse any particular interest. 

Occultism Occult means "hidden," and occultism refers to the study of hidden wisdom, which comes from an inner spiritual study. This is in contrast to science, which studies observable, measurable phenomena. The term is most often applied to the initiates of secret magical societies that began to emerge in Western Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons. 

The secret society of the Rosicrucians, which tradition says was originally established in the fifteenth century, was particularly active in the seventeenth century. This was an organization of mystics devoted to alchemy, cabalism, and theosophy. Its existence and the impression it produced on the popular imagination are evidences of the persistent appeal which mysticism and mystery exerted in this century. 

There is now at Bradford a flourishing Lodge of this Rosicrucian Society and the Lodge is worked very well indeed by men who really know something. From 1880 onwards, until at least the beginning of World War I, articles and works about Hermes Trismegistus and the Corpus Heimeticum proliferated, principally in the journals more or less connected with the Theosophical Society, and secondarily in "Rosicrucian" publications ...

By 1625, Rosicrucian scientists had also become victims of the witch-hunt. Even the fledgling Royal Society, established by Charles I on St Andrew s Day, was obliged to go underground where it became the Invisible College in 1649."° The Royal Society eventually emerged in 1662 under Charles IPs sponsorship." He had an alchemy laboratory built under his bedchamber, with access by a private staircase. 

It is interesting to note that all three societies of architecture and building, the lonians, Dorians and Dionysian Artificers, advocated generous acts of benevolence. They practiced this charity along with their architecture and building.These groups were the archetypal forerunners of the Rosicrucians. 

This attitude shows a certain resemblance to some ideas in the two treatises mentioned above, in which Maier took part in the debate about the Fraternitas Roseae Crucis In these he justifies the existence of the brotherhood and its maintenance of anonymity by the observation inter alia that secret societies for the investigation of nature, and above all of res chymicae, have existed in very age.". The Rosicrucians, according to Maier, were a collection of upright men, doctors of medicine and investigators of nature.For reasons of self-defence, they can scarcely be expected to expose themselves to criticism or exploitation from outsiders and it is known that alchemy still has many opponents.One should also take into consideration the dangers that beset the honest Chymici, on the one side from swindlers and on the other from unscrupulous and greedy patrons.
