The Metaphysics

Baryons are held together in atomic nuclei by strong interaction and at least one further level of reduction at which protons and neutrons are separated, can be envisaged. Since a free neutron disintegrates spontaneously, ponderable matter can be considered as made up of protons, electrons and neutrinos. Each of these carry characteristic amounts of mass, charge and spin. The neutrino apparently has zero mass and charge. 

The fundamental assumption in this work is that the three elementary units are indivisible wave structures in the vacuum. The quarks, assumed to be confined in a proton, are considered a manisfestation of the wave structure.

At this point the reduction has reached the level of philosophical discourse and shows remarkable similarity with the metaphysics of the 17th century mathematician and philosopher Rene Descartes. He argued that if the only thing that is clearly understandable in matter is mathematical proportions, then matter and spatial extension are the same. On this basis he rejected not only the idea of indivisible atoms but also of the void. Where there is space, there is by definition extension and, therefore matter, and hence the void is undefined.

The centuries-long practice of describing bodies in terms of the metaphysical four-element style, or one or another of its latter day successors, had only the appearance of a compositional expression. The four elements and the five of the iatrochymists, were only words representing the qualities perceived in a body resembling the qualities of one or another of the presumed elements. This approach carried with it the implication that the qualities of the mixt were a mix of the qualities of the elements involved. 

Let us now examine how Rouelle s new element/instrument system gave rational coherence to both the metaphysical tradition of the four elements, as well as incorporating their recently developed materialities of composition. Rouelle has not left us with an account, so the following conjecture is circumstantial, though plausible.

Many people believe that psi abilities per se are a manifestation of some sort of higher force or spirituality. Thus, if a person does something apparently psychic, he is given great authority and power. Others believe that psi manifestations are a manifestation of primitive or evil forces and so people associated with them are automatically thought to be primitive or insane or wicked. I would prefer the metaphysical theories that see psi as a manifestation of higher forces and claim that they...

While Aristode has spoken in the Categories as if the claim that substances underlie properties is totally unproblematic, in the Metaphysics he begins to draw consequences from this claim as to what really is the object of substance. As one can see in Met Z 3 he considers whether to say that substance, that which underlies everything else, is matter or form by contrast in the Categories he had still spoken as if substances were the concrete things of our experience - tables, horses, trees, men-just as we are acquainted with them. How does it come about, we must ask, that Aristotle is no longer satisfied with the answer of the Categories 8...

Aquinas claims that the category of quality flows from form and that the category of quantity flows from matter. Furthermore, although Aquinas does not use the word motion in his derivation in the Metaphysics commentaries, it is clear from the following passage that he is talking about motion as Aristotle in Physics III, 2, characterizes it...
