The First Wear Tester

Within each test chamber, a stationary quarter-inch diameter polymer pin was mounted superiorly with respect to a sliding, stainless steel plate. The height of each pin was recorded continuously during the test by a height gauge. 

Wear testing rig built at Wrightington, constructed by Harry Craven, which was used to test pins of PTFE and the first UHMWPE. 

Still on display in Wrightington, the rig is only partially assembled today. Inspection reveals a very sturdily constructed apparatus. Craven s pride in his craftsmanship is evident because his name is stamped into the top of the rig.
