The Coating Process

Early types of coatings included silicone oils and rubbers, polyamideimide, cellulose lacquers and blocked urethanes. Hot melts have also been proposed n -1 . It proved to be difficult to overcome problems in handling, stability, durability and speed of application (drawing speeds of up to 10 m s are required). 

Alternatively, thermally cured silicone elastomers are often used, notably in Japan. They provide excellent microbending protection but the low rate of curing (about 1.5 m s ) is an economic draw-back.

The primary substrates or support iaclude many types of paper and paperboard, polymer films such as polyethylene terephthalate, metal foils, woven and nonwoven fabrics, fibers, and metal cods. Although the coating process is better suited to continuous webs than to short iadividual sheets, it does work very well for intermittent coating, such as ia the printing process. In general, there is an ideal coater arrangement for any given product. 

Experimental techniques to visualize flows have been extensively used to define fluid flow in pipes and air flow over lift and control surface of airplanes. More recently this technology has been appHed to the coating process and it is now possible to visualize the flow patterns (16,17). The dimensions of the flow field are small, and the flow patterns both along the flow and inside the flow are important. Specialized techniques such as utilizing small hydrogen bubbles, dye injection, and optional sectioning, are required to visualize these flows.

Solvents. Solvents are only present in the manufacturing stage of the coating process. They are not present in the finished product. As the coating is baked, the solvent evaporates, polymerization occurs and the resin adheres to the base surface. 

There have been notable improvements in the control, efficiency and understanding of several of the coating processes. 

Purity of materials and environmental conditions are the main causes of limitations of the performances of the coating processes. 

Capital cost was reduced by two-thirds compared to a traditional dip-coating process. The lower operating costs resulted in the coating process comprising 18% of the steel cost, compared to 60% with traditional methods. The payback period was three years for replacing existing plant.14... 

Boron-containing carbons synthesized by co-pyrolysis of coal-tar pitch with pyridine-borane complex (series 25Bn) have already been considered as hosts for lithium insertion [4], Unlike the commercial graphites described above, the boron-doped carbon 25B2 (WUT) as received was not suitable for direct use in the cylindrical cell due to very large and hard particles. This feature makes the coating process very difficult.
