Thackray museum in Leeds

On one hand, commercial production of the Chamley prosthesis by Thackray Ltd. is reported to have started between 1968 and 1969. The production date has been confirmed from several sources (Isaac, Dowson, and Wroblewski 1996, Brummit 2002), including a commercial release pamphlef from 1969 produced by Thackray that is available at the Thackray Museum in Leeds (see Figure 4-11). Thackray s documentation clearly indicates that the UHMWPE cups were gamma irradiated by a dose of 2.5 Mrad. It has been reported that no sterilization records from that time survive today (Brummit 2002). [Pg.81]

Up until 1963, the acetabular cups used at Wrightington were fabricated either by Chamley himself at his home workshop or by technicians at the hospital workshop in Wrightington [17, 18] (Figure 4.6). Chamley s home workshop was used to develop implant prototypes, as well as instruments. His 1/2 hp lathe, purchased in 1946, is now on display at the Thackray museum in Leeds. Chamley s biography recounts that throughout his life, he was able to mock up any surgical device in his workshop, and try it out himself before having it manufactured. ... [Pg.35]
