The reluctance of acrylic monomers to polymerise in the presence of air has been made a virtue with the anaerobic acrylic adhesives. These are usually dimethacrylates such as tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The monomers are supplied with a curing system comprising a peroxide and an amine as part of a one-part pack. When the adhesive is placed between mild steel surfaces air is excluded, which prevents air inhibition, and the iron present acts as a polymerisation promoter. The effectiveness as a promoter varies from one metal to another and it may be necessary to use a primer such as cobalt naphthenate. The anaerobic adhesives have been widely used for sealing nuts and bolts and for a variety of engineering purposes. Small tube containers are also available for domestic use. [Pg.420]

Materials. The polyurethane precursor materials were Adiprene L-lOO (Uniroyal, Inc.), a poly(oxytetramethylene glycol) capped with toluene diisocyanate, eq. mol. wt. 1030 1,4-butanediol (BD) and 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane (TMP) and, as catalyst, dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL). Acrylic precursors included n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), washed with 10% aq. NaOH to remove inhibitor tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TMGDM) crosslinker and benzoin sec-butyl ether (BBE) as a photosensitizer. These materials were dried appropriately but not otherwise purified. [Pg.247]

The most important method for the synthesis of star polymers by GTP involves the use of a diftmctional monomer either as an arm-first or as a core-first approach. Usually, EGDM is used as the difunctional monomer. However, other multifunctional monomers, such as tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate, trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, and 1,4-butylene dimethacrylate have been used. [Pg.57]
