Terpenoids source indicators

A study to determine the absolute content of the volatile component of C. arietinum was conducted after the pod borer (H. armigera) was shown to be attracted to chickpea seed volatiles [14, 88]. GC-MS analysis of headspace material was collected from ground C. arietinum and identified 132 compounds from mass spectrum analysis retention times or Kovats indices (Table 1) along with a further 22 compounds which are not included here because their identities could not be confirmed [89]. The most abundant components were aliphatic hydrocarbons but the next most abundant class was the terpenoids constituting approximately 35% of the volatile fractions of the floured seed. The plants of the Hemandiaceae are recognized as sources of lignans (7,13,16-18), terpenoids (13,19,20), flavonoids (19,21), and alkaloids (Table I). This latter group constitutes the largest class of chemical constituents in this family. Ph)dochemical investigation of this family has revealed the occurrence of about 128 alkaloids (Table I) belonging to seventeen different stmctural tjrpes, which are classified as indicated in Chart I. 

As is the case with other classes of natural products, a trivial name based on the biological source material is invariably assigned to a new terpenoid. Thus terpenoid compounds usually carry a name derived from the family, genus, species, or local name of the raw material from which it had been isolated. Because functionality of a new compound is readily established, a trivial name is coined to indicate the dominant functionality.
