Teorell, Torsten

When Torsten Teorell made his thesis at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in 1933, he presented an alternative explanation of the variations in composition with rate of secretion his back-diffusion theory. Teorell refined and elaborated his theory in 1947, " and after he became professor of physiology at Uppsala, his students, notably Karl Johann Obrink, provided further evidence supporting it. Teorell said that HCl is secreted by the parietal cells at some yet to be determined primary concentration. At or near the site of secretion, HCl diffuses through a permeable barrier in exchange for NaCl from plasma. Tick s equation applies to the diffusion process, and HCl and NaCL diffuse as ion pairs. No diluting or neutralizing fluid is secreted. Teorell, who was much more interested in physical... [Pg.19]

Babkin found even stronger confirmation of his belief in the neutralizing power of mucus when he tested the ability of the stomach itself to secrete after it had been filled with 300 ml of 1% acetic acid. In those experiments, acetic acid caused a great outpouring of mucus that continued into the subsequent period when Babkin stimulated secretion either by histamine injection of by sham feeding (Fig. 3-10). In presenting his results, Babkin argued that Torsten Teorell s theory of back-diffusion could not account for the results. ... [Pg.121]

From the time of Torsten Teorell s experiments in 1933,the conclusion that some H disappears from the lumen by back-diffusion has been based upon the disappearance of a mass of This does not provide clear proof of back-diffusion,... [Pg.272]

Ussing, Determination (n. 79). There was a certain amount of heart burning over the fact that Ussing got the credit, although the idea was simultaneously published by Torsten Teorell and by Henry Eyring and his students. [Pg.350]
